Todd Powers, the owner of Jock in the Box Entertainment, shares with Patch readers a bit about this Durham-based disc jockey company.

How did you come up with the name?
My wife Karen created the name back in college saying that if I ever owned a sporting goods store I should call it "Jock in the Box." It coincidentally also worked for a disc jockey company.

Why choose that location? Why start a business in Durham?
Close to home and it has such a great small town feel!

Briefly, what business are you in?
Disc Jockey/Wedding Specialist/Entertainment/Up Lights

What's the most difficult moment or challenge you've faced as a business owner?
Balancing time between family and work. Also, there is no "corporate" to call to get advice or help. All decisions are made and lived with by yourself.

Were there any challenges that made you second guess your decision to be an entrepreneur?
Never!

What's been your favorite moment or proudest achievement since opening?
Being the party host for the ABC's "The View" holiday party was pretty great! They could not have been a more gracious group of people who know how to have fun!

What's the most innovative idea your employees or customers have had that you put into practice?
We have come up with something called a "Live Edit" Slide Show where we will take the words from a bride and grooms vows/blessing/toast and incorporate them into a song. We then take photos from the day of the wedding and create a short movie/slide show and show it right at the wedding!

How do you deal with difficult customers?
For the most part we don't have any... it is the happiest days of their lives and we keep a positive approach to make sure they have the best day ever!

How does your business give back or get involved in the community?
Every year we donate our time and effort to two very important fundraisers. One is the DR Mission Team that helps the poorest of the poor in the Dominican Republic. The other is The Sister's Project out of Wallingford that helps assist families who are directly effected by cancer.
