Long-Time Durham Restaurant Closes Abruptly

The owners say it was a "decision made under great pressure."

DURHAM, CT — The owners of the popular Time Out Taverne announced that the long-time eatery has closed for good.

On its website, the owners say, "Time Out has ceased operations! Our last day of business was Monday, February 11th. It was a decision made under great pressure, and with great reluctance. The owners and staff are crushed that it ended this way, while we were making a great effort to turn things around. I didn’t even have time to post our new lunch menu… Sorry, everybody!"

The restaurant was located at 100 New Haven Road on Route 17. The restaurant has been in town for more than a few decades.

First Selectman Laura Francis told the Record Journal that the owners, Jack and Karen Castiglione and Gary Carmichael, have been very supportive of the community and engaged in several civic-minded programs.

According to its website, "Time Out Taverne offers friendly, small town ambiance in sophisticated surroundings. A fireplaced dining room is adorned with posters from the famous Durham Fair, while the theme in the lounge is sports – including an astonishing Fenway Park mural (find the hidden Yankee logos!) near the handsome mahogany bar. High ceilings and tall windows impart an airy atmosphere; leather booths lend a cozy, intimate feel. "
