MIDDLEFIELD, CT— The Middlefield Volunteer Fire Co. rescued a driver who was trapped inside their vehicle as live utility wires fell on top of the car. Shortly after 5:30 pm Monday, crews responded to a motor vehicle accident involving a car versus telephone pole on Jackson Hill Road near Oxford Drive.

First arriving units found one car into a pole, with the pole snapped at the base. The vehicle was occupied with live wires on the vehicle, fire officials said. Crews established a safe area and awaited the arrival of Eversource so the power could be cut to the downed wires, which allowed responders to safely access the operator who remained in the vehicle, officials said.

"In situations like this, we rely on the quick response from the power company to make the scene safe for emergency personnel to do their job. If you find yourself in a situation where there are power lines on your vehicle, remain in your car and follow the directions from emergency responders. Jackson Hill Road remained closed into the morning while Eversource made repairs to restore power to the area. The crash is being investigated by the Connecticut State Police-Troop F Westbrook," the Middlefield Volunteer Fire Co. posted on its Facebook page.
