Two Durham Businesses Receive Blue Ribbon Business Award

The Durham Economic Development Commission has announced the recipients of the Blue Ribbon Business Award for the second quarter of 2019. This award was created to show our appreciation and support for our local businesses. There are two recipients of the Blue Ribbon Business Award for the second quarter of 2019; Brenda’s Main Street Feed and The Chapman Manufacturing Company.

Those who nominated Brenda’s Main Street Feed for the Blue Ribbon Business Award noted that owner, Brenda Eddy, has consistently supported many Durham civic organizations as well as school events and charity events. She donates to many animal welfare organizations as well as running a cat rescue, Cause for Paws, and is a member of The Durham Animal Response Team or D.A.R.T. Her knowledge of animals and her outstanding personal service were also noted by those who nominated her. One young member of the Durham community who submitted a nomination wrote, “Brenda cares about the well-being of everyone and I love her for that.” Brenda’s Main Street Feed was established in 1980.

The Chapman Manufacturing Company was established in 1936 in Old Man Chapman’s garage in Durham then moved to its current location on New Haven Road when it was purchased by Bill and Doris LeVee. Current owner, Tracy Camassar, was chosen by the LeVees to take over the operations of the shop about 7 years ago. She and her son, Joel, and husband, Jason, have kept the operations virtually the same, using all American-based sources and materials to create their tool kits. Aside from a great product and outstanding service, those who nominated this small manufacturing company noted the owner’s contributions to the environment by recycling everything including their trash, metal shavings, oil used in the shop and the packaging materials they receive which are used in their outgoing packages. Tracy and company have received the Connecticut DEEP Green Circle award 3 years in a row for their recycling efforts, ridding their property of invasive plant species and for planting native species of flora. The grounds of the facility are a National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat.

The Blue Ribbons and Certificates of Recognition were presented to each recipient in early June 2019.
