School Officials Propose Teacher Layoffs In East Hampton: Report

Education supporters are also planning to rally before the proposed budget is reviewed by the Town Council.

EAST HAMPTON, CT — School officials have released a list of proposed teacher layoffs due to a steep reduction in the 2018-19 budget, as reported by the Middletown Press. Education supporters are also planning to rally outside the high school before the proposed budget is reviewed by the Town Council.

According to the Middletown Press, school officials originally proposed a 3.73 percent increase in spending on education, however the Board of Finance reduced this to 1.5 percent. As a result, $670,000 was cut from the school board’s request.

In an email, Superintendent of Schools Paul K. Smith identified eight potential reductions in the teaching staff, which included three positions at the high school, according to the Middletown Press.
