Non-Resident Property Owners in East Haven to Get Letters Requesting Contact Information
The contact information is being requested in an effort to improve safety and hold landlords accountable.

East Haven will begin mailing letters notifying non-resident property owner-landlords to file their contact information with the Department of Planning and Zoning.
The letters are being mailed as part of a new ordinance passed by the East Haven Town Council in December and recommended by Mayor Joseph Maturo Jr.
According to a press release from the Mayor’s office, the ordinance defines owner-landlord as the owner of a dwelling unit which is rented or leased to an individual or business and who does not reside at that location or within the geographic boundaries of East Haven. The town wants to register this information to assist the Zoning Department for the purposes of enforcing property maintenance standards and for emergency circumstances. The completed database will be made available to the town’s public safety dispatchers.

“This legislation will hold landlords accountable and will assist us in sustaining property values and the quality of life for neighbors of problem properties,” Maturo said in the press release.
The Planning & Zoning Department will be sending out letters and forms to these property owners informing them of the need to complete the initial filing within 60 days from receipt. The registration is free, however failure to register or to notify the town of future changes can result in monthly fines as prescribed in the ordinance. The ordinance also requires all nonresident owner-landlords or agents to give contact information to any tenants.
