ELLINGTON/SOMERS, CT — Here are some recent notable accomplishments by local college students, as provided by readMedia Newswire.

Assumption University, Worcester MA

  • Nearly 400 graduates received a bachelor's degree during Assumption University's 104th Commencement exercises on Sunday, May 9, at the DCU Center in downtown Worcester. Local students included Crystal Dostie of Ellington, and Lauren Masamery of Somers.

  • The Political Science Department at Eastern Connecticut State University inducted 14 students into Pi Sigma Alpha, the international honor society for political science, on April 28. Among the inductees was Reece Munter of Ellington, a senior majoring in Political Science. To be inducted, students must have at least a junior standing with an overall 3.4 GPA, as well as a 3.2 GPA in the political science major.
  • Eastern Connecticut State University's Psychological Science Department held its Psi Chi Induction Ceremony and Honors Recognition on April 30. Combining the years of 2020 and 2021, the ceremony inducted 53 students into the Psi Chi International Honor Society for Psychology and recognized 18 students for distinction. Among the honorees were Ellington residents Caitlin Burke, who majors in Psychology, and Christine Montanari, who majors in Psychology. Both were 2020 inductees.
  • Eastern Connecticut State University's English Department recognized students at its semesterly English Night awards ceremony on May 6. At the conclusion of the fall semester in December 2020, the English Department inducted students into the Sigma Tau Delta honor society. Among the students was Natalie Devlin of Somers, a senior majoring in History & Social Science and English. Devlin received the Award for Academic Excellence. This award goes to a student who has demonstrated superior ability in and dedication to English studies.
  • Eastern Connecticut State University inducted 25 students into the Delta Mu Delta Honor Society (DMD) on May 6. This international honor society recognizes accounting, business administration, business information systems and finance majors. Among the students inducted was senior Ryan Elgin of Somers, who majors in Business Administration.
  • Eastern Connecticut State University's Department of Environmental Earth Science (EES) held its annual award and induction ceremony on May 6. Four students were inducted into the Theta Upsilon chapter of the Sigma Gamma Epsilon (SGE) national honor society in earth sciences and nine awards were distributed for outstanding work within the field. Among the students recognized was sophomore Kilee Nutbrown of Somers, who majors in Environmental Earth Science. Nutbrown won the Sophomore Academic Excellence Award.

Muhlenberg College, Allentown PA

  • Muhlenberg College dancers shared their creativity through movement, as the Muhlenberg Dance Program and the Muhlenberg Dance Association collaborated to present "Ephemerality: Dances In Time," a showcase for dance works created by student and faculty choreographers April 16-18. Many students, including Marissa Haluch of Somers, joined together to make this event possible.

  • Shawna Fisher of Ellington, Colin Holmes and Adam Adexler, all of Ellington, and William Fraher of Somers were named to the winter 2021 President's List. The winter term runs from January to May. Full-time students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.700 and above are named to the President's List. Full-time status is achieved by earning 12 credits; undergraduate day students must earn 12 credits in fall or spring semester, and online students must earn 12 credits in either EW1 & EW2, EW3 & EW4, or EW5 & EW6.
  • Kiley Russell of Somers and Naomi Schneider of Ellington were named to the winter 2021 Dean's List. Full-time students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.500 to 3.699 are named to the Dean's List. Full-time status is achieved by earning 12 credits; undergraduate day students must earn 12 credits in fall or spring semester, and online students must earn 12 credits in either EW1 & EW2, EW3 & EW4, or EW5 & EW6.

University of Nebraska, Lincoln NE

  • Justin Paul Talbot of Somers was among 3,512 graduates who received degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln during commencement exercises May 7 and 8. Talbot earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with highest distinction from the College of Business.

Western New England University, Springfield MA

  • Over 80 students from the Western New England University College of Arts & Sciences were welcomed into Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society in a virtual induction ceremony on March 5. Alpha Lambda Delta recognizes the best and brightest members of the nation's first-year college students. The mission of the Society is to encourage superior academic achievement, to promote intelligent living and a high standard of learning, and to assist students in recognizing and developing meaningful goals in society. Students in Alpha Lambda Delta must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 after their first semester of full-time enrollment. Among the honorees were Morgan Holden of Ellington, working toward a BA in Law & Society, and Kayla Scibelli of Somers, working toward a BA in Psychology.
