SOMERS, CT — A busy road on the eastern edge of Somers will face traffic disruption and detours for several months beginning in early June, as the Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) begins a culvert replacement project.

Turnpike Rd. will be closed in the area of the Battle St. intersection from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each weekday beginning June 2, as replacement of the bridge over Gillettes Brook takes place. Detours have been mapped, as shown below, and alternating traffic with the use of flaggers will be used as needed, the DOT said in a statement.

According to the DOT, "the project consists of replacing the existing metal pipe culvert with a three-sided rigid frame structure on pile supported footings. Concrete wingwalls will be installed to direct flow and retain roadway embankment. The roadway will be widened to accommodate two, 12-foot wide lanes and two 4-foot shoulders. Bituminous curbing and metal beam rail with end treatments will be installed along both sides of roadway. Roadway over the rigid frame will undergo full depth reconstruction with milling and overlay of the approaches."

Enfield-based Spazzarini Construction Co. was awarded the construction contract in late October, at a cost of $1,788,617. The work is scheduled to be completed by Nov. 10, 2020, the DOT said.
