SOMERSVILLE, CT — Southbound drivers traversing Maple Street in Somersville will have to get used to something they've never seen there before - a new stop sign at an awkward intersection in front of the historic Ye Olde Blacksmith Shoppe museum.

For decades, southbound Maple Street traffic has not stopped at the junctions of Pinney and Scitico roads, turning mainly left onto Pinney, continuing slightly right on Maple or turning right into the Somers Industrial Park on Scitico. Northbound vehicles have always had a stop sign at the intersection, adjacent to the museum, and sight lines have always been difficult, particularly at the Pinney Road stop sign at Maple.

Several weeks ago, the new sign was put into place, the easement on the west side of Maple was extended and new curbing was added.

"We made the improvements several weeks ago. It’s been “in the works” for a couple of years," public works director Todd Rolland said.
