Picture Ellington - Then And Now
An old photograph and brief story from Ellington's past, and how that site appears today.

ELLINGTON, CT — Once again, our look into Ellington history brings us to a fascinating picture book entitled Images of America: Ellington. The book, compiled by Lynn Kloter Fahy for the Ellington Historical Society, was first published in 2005, and contains 128 pages of amazing photos and stories of the small town formerly known as "the Great Marsh." It may be purchased from the Nellie McKnight Museum store here.
This picture, looking west on Maple Street, was taken in Aug. 1923. On the right, beyond the fence, is the Daniel Kimball House, a sprawling 2-story Greek Revival structure of 4,334 square feet built in 1848. Kimball and his wife moved into the house around 1888, and their daughter and son-in-law also resided on the premises.
The house is located on a 1.38-acre lot at 49 Maple Street, just west of the driveway for the Ellington Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Ellington High School is adjacent to that property.

The parcel is part of the Ellington Center Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
Here is a more contemporary look at the same view from late 2019, courtesy of Google Maps.
