Policy Clarified On Use of New Track At Somers High School
Some confusion arose about the availability for use of the newly-renovated facility due to some wording on a sign at the entrance.

SOMERS, CT — Some wording on a sign posted at the entrance to the newly-renovated Somers High School track and athletic complex caused confusion among residents, who did not believe they would be allowed to use the track without written authorization.
The first item listed under Rules and Regulations states, "Users must be in possession of a signed authorization form." A number of residents wrote social media posts, asking if the policy meant persons wishing to walk the track had to sign a form and be granted permission.
Superintendent of Schools Brian Czapla clarified the policy in an email to Patch, writing, "The public is welcomed to use the track when there is not an event taking place. Any non-school clubs or organizations, etc. that want to use it for a sporting event must get approval from the Superintendent's Office."

Renovations to the track and an athletic field contained within it, including lighting for nighttime play, were approved by voters at a Nov. 2018 referendum. Construction began last August, and the synthetic turf field was completed just before the end of the year. Work on the track was completed this spring.
