Somers Cub Scout Pack 83 Replaces Birdhouses

Learning about conservation and providing service to the community.

Somers Cub Scout Pack 83 is furthering their relationship with the Northern Connecticut Land Trust (NCLT) by building and replacing the bluebird houses at McCann Family Farm and Whitaker Woods, two NCLT properties in Somers. The replacement birdhouses were built by the Bears of Den 8 (3rd grade) and each is labeled with the name of the Scout builder. Old birdhouses were removed and new ones installed by the Senior Webelos of Den 1 (5th grade), with help from some younger Cub Scouts, on November 23, 2019. The kids were excited to see that though birds had vacated the deteriorating houses, mice had moved into some of them! Each time a Cub Scout den goes for a hike in McCann or Whitaker, they will collect data on the birds and animals (or evidence of them) that they see. In the spring, and periodically afterwards, the Cub Scouts will check on the bird houses, clean them out if necessary, and record activity that they witness. Pack 83 will continue to work closely with NCLT as their properties are a rich source of learning and an opportunity to participate in the conservation of natural resources, part of the Cub Scout’s Outdoor Code. Somers Cub Scout Pack 83 is open to kids in grades K-5 and can be reached at https://www.facebook.com/SomersPack83. To learn more about NCLT: http://northernctlandtrust.org/
