WEST HAVEN, CT — It took exactly two years and five days, but the Coginchaug High School softball team finally got its chance to avenge its 3-2 loss to Somers in the CIAC Class S championship game of 2019.

After a season lost last year to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, the two teams returned to West Haven High School Saturday for a much-anticipated rematch. This time, it was no contest, as the Blue Devils broke a 1-1 tie with a 7-run fourth inning, paving the way to a 14-2 victory for the program's 12th state championship.

It was a second straight day of celebration for Coginchaug faithful, as the baseball team shut out St. Paul 8-0 Friday night for that squad's first state title since 1972.

Somers tied the game at 1-all in its half of the third when Mackenzie Mike doubled and courtesy runner Lauren Zapolski scored on a single by Gabrielle Tullock.

Coginchaug's fourth-inning outburst came via five hits and some Spartan miscues in the field. The key hit was a bases-clearing double by No. 9 hitter Alayna Mariani, who knocked in four runs during the contest. DeMartino and Dana Boothroyd also had RBI singles in the inning.

Somers got one back in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double by Grace Majowicz, but the Blue Devils put the game out of reach with four more tallies in the fifth. Mariani and Ava Marenna each had RBI singles, while DeMartino contributed a run-scoring double.

Boothroyd closed out the scoring with a 2-run single in the seventh, making a winner of her twin sister, pitcher Kelly Boothroyd. She allowed 10 hits, but struck out nine and did not walk a batter.
It was the first softball title for Coginchaug since 2012.
