Bridge In Thompsonville Section of Enfield to Close Temporarily

ENFIELD, CT — A small bridge on South River Street near the Donald Barnes boat launch will be closed for several hours over the course of the early part of this week.

Signs posted in the area indicate the bridge over Freshwater Brook will close between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. No explanation of the reasons for the closure were offered on the town website, but the bridge has been in need of permanent repairs for several years.

From May to November 2018, the 100-year-old bridge was closed when inspections discovered severe section loss to the metal beam ends on the northern abutment. A report dated May 23, 2019 from the Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) calls for:

  • replacement of the bridge
  • relocation of a segment of South River Street west of its current alignment
  • installation of roadway and safety improvements, including a new sidewalk along the west side of South River Street
  • improvements to the public boat launch at 12 South River Street
  • reconstruction of the entrance to the public boat launch
