Veterans Day is observed each year on Nov. 11, the anniversary of the armistice ending World War I.

ENFIELD, CT — Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day from 1919 to 1954, celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans. Some Patch readers in north-central Connecticut have shared brief stories and photos of their beloved veterans.

Anyone wishing to add their favorite veteran to this column may do so by emailing tim.jensen@patch.com. Include the veteran's name, branch of service, rank and era served.

He was sent to Peleliu in 1944. He was hit by shrapnel, suffered his entire life from the repercussions and died from cancer at the age of 69.

Trained on the M18 Hellcat Tank Destroyer and other tracked vehicles. However, his training was interrupted in Dec. 1944 when the Germans overran the Ardennes and the Allies suffered a manpower shortage in Europe. His unit was rushed overseas and he was assigned to the 702nd Tank Destroyers, part of the 2nd Armored Division, until the end of the war.
