ENFIELD, CT — Today's look back at town history, courtesy of the Facebook group Picture Enfield, brings us to the early 1980s, and a multi-unit office building at 325 Hazard Ave. At the time, four businesses operated out of the 2-story Colonial, which was built in 1890.

David Fredrick, who owned the building, operated Fredrick Realty. A former teacher at Enfield High School, he spent nearly four decades in real estate sales and development. Dave passed away on Dec. 7, 2020 at age 79.

Also conducting business out of the building were Minute Mart, Inc., operated by Paul Picone, and Financial Leasing Corp., about which we know absolutely nothing. Perhaps our readers will recall that company.

The fourth business is Copper Travels, a travel agency (remember those?) owned and operated for many years by Graham Hird. He eventually moved the business up the road to the Galaxy Plaza at 251 Hazard Ave.

In 2003, Crystal Theocles purchased the property and opened Scruples Salon & Day Spa, which thrives in that spot to this day. Here is a recent view of the building, taken on my morning walk around 7:30 this morning.

Last week's trivia answer:
Last week's trivia question was, "Who was the last Democratic first selectman in Enfield, prior to the town's conversion to the current council-manager form of government?" The answer: John Guminiak, a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II who was the first selectman in the early 1960s. He also served a stint as the town's tax collector, and worked for many years with the state Department of Transportation. He died on May 26, 2012 at age 94. Glen Guminiak, John's son, was the first person to provide the correct answer.
