ENFIELD, CT — A routine traffic stop on North Main St. Thursday evolved into a foot pursuit between police and a Massachusetts man who was in possession of a stolen loaded pistol, a considerable amount of narcotics, more than 20 pounds of marijuana and nearly $5,000 in cash.

Javon Gilkes, 32, of Springfield faces multiple felony charges, including possession and trafficking of controlled substances, possession of a stolen firearm and interfering with an officer. He is being held in lieu of $250,000 bond.

At 1:06 p.m., an officer executed a traffic stop for a seat belt violation on North Main near Route 5. During initial contact with Gilkes, the officer noticed in plain view a clear plastic bag containing 81 Oxycodone pills, which were seized. The officer asked Gilkes to exit the vehicle; when he did, he attempted to escape on foot, according to a report by Sgt. James Held.
