ENFIELD, CT — Just a few months ago, business prospects appeared bleak for Audrey Poynton and her small retail boutique, The Eclectic Peacock. In late December, a pipe burst inside the Palomba Drive location of the shop, forcing its temporary closure, then the coronavirus pandemic hit, forcing innumerable small businesses to shut their doors.

After operating a few pop-up shops and conducting business online, Poynton avoided having to throw in the towel by catching a break in early summer. Some friends had retired from their own business and were selling the building it had inhabited on Route 5 for many years, at a reasonable price. Before Poynton knew it, she was back in business in her own storefront - the longtime Awards & More site at 492 Enfield Street.

After months of being down and nearly out, The Eclectic Peacock reopens this Saturday in its new showplace.

"I am super excited to be in this historic building," Poynton said, adding she and her husband have made considerable changes to the interior. They created an open floor plan by taking down a couple of walls, refinished the original hardwood floors and removed the drop ceilings, so "now we have 12-foot ceilings," she said.

The unique shop offers clothing, art, jewelry and accessories. Jeans, T-shirts, tops and dresses are available from designers such as MAVI Jeans, Silver Jean Co, Robert Graham, Johnny Was, Lucky, Chaser and more. Work from talented artists like Lisa Jaye, Madison Latimer, Will Bullas and Pix Perfect is also featured.

Nearly a dozen exciting and beautiful jewelry lines are carried at the boutique to compliment any style or taste. Accessories such as purses, totes, clutches and scarves can also be found in the shop, as well as many other hidden gems. Poynton said she plans to "rotate different stuff all the time."

Poynton opened the original shop in 2018 in a small plaza at 74 Palomba Drive, in a space which had housed the Bromage-Wilcox Insurance Agency for decades.

"I always had a passion for retail, having worked in retail in my younger days," she said. "I found there was no place in Enfield for cool artisan stuff."

The grand opening of the new Route 5 location is this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., which will be normal Saturday hours. The boutique will be open Wednesdays through Fridays, 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
