Hebron Avenue Road Work Causing Temporary Traffic Congestion

If you're traveling to the town center Thursday via Hebron Avenue, it might be best to seek an alternate route to avoid the intersections with New London Turnpike and Center Street.

Traffic along Hebron Avenue was backed up to the Route 2 off ramp Wednesday as a crew from the town highway department dug test holes along the major route to the village center.

The men weren't digging for gold nuggets, though. The crew was looking for utility wires that might make relocating the aboveground utility poles along the roadside tricky.

Charlie Little, town highway maintenance supervisor, said the town plans on widening Hebron Avenue between New London Turnpike and Center Street to make room for a dedicated turning lane. The eight test holes being strategically dug along the sidewalk and at the intersections will provide the town engineering department a better idea of where to avoid relocating the poles.

So while the goal is to improve the traffic flow in that area, for a day or two, at least now, drivers will have to plan for a bit of a traffic mess.

A couple good options for detours include Hebron Avenue to House Street to Salmon Brook Drive to New London Turnpike or Hebron Avenue to Linden and Clinton streets to New London Turnpike. Take your pick depending on what side of the Main Street area that you're trying to access.

Oh, and take care on the sidewalks in that area, they'll be put back together but not repaved until later in the spring.
