In 2018 and 2019, the Town of Glastonbury was notified by homeowners from the Minnechaug Mountain and Chestnut Hill Corridor sections of town that they had detected elevated levels of naturally occurring uranium in their well water. In response to these concerns, the Town engaged Thriving Earth Exchange (TEX) to study the naturally occurring uranium observed in groundwater in these sections of town. TEX connects communities with scientists and supports them as they work collaboratively to tackle local challenges related to natural hazards, natural resources, and climate change.

As part of this joint project, TEX matched Glastonbury with three scientists with specialized knowledge in water quality, geochemistry, hydrology and geology, as well as sustainability and policy solutions. The Glastonbury Health Department provided the TEX scientists with years of water quality data, formatted for scientific review, to aid in their investigative study.Â
Through scientific analysis of the data and ongoing communication with Town staff, the TEX scientists developed a report and infographic document outlining their findings regarding naturally occurring uranium in well water in Glastonbury. (See below.) The Town will look to host a community forum whereby the scientists can present these findings to town residents, however the report is being made available in the interim to serve as a valued resource for community members. Any further details regarding a public forum will be posted to the Town website as applicable.
