Blood Drive Coming, The Civil War and the Sean, Iron Chef in Mystic
Five things to know on Wednesday, August 14.

- The National Weather Service says today is going to be sunny with a high near 78. Tonight is supposed to be clear with a low of 54.
- The Groton Municipal Building is hosting a blood drive for the American Red Cross Thursday. There is a shortage of blood and you are literally saving someone’s life with your donation.
- The Emerson Theatre Company is performing a play this weekend, “Hour Father” by David Greer, at the First United Methodist Church. The description is intriguing, “An epic play with cosmic and biblical tones told through rural, gospel, and hip hop rhythms, Hour Farther explores the notion: is blood thicker than water?” Show starts at 7 p.m., tickets are $10.
- The Groton Public Library is hosting a discussion on Connecticut, the Civil War and the Sea from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in meeting Room 1 and 2.
- The Mystic Area Shelter and Hospitality is hosting its 7th annual "Iron Chef" Competition & Auction for Action. This year’s event features executive chefs from Foxwoods and Mohegan who will go head to head in a culinary battle. The event raises funds to support local families with children facing homelessness. For this year’s event takes place at St. Edmund’s Retreat at Enders Island on Friday, August 16th from 6 to 10pm. The chef competition begins promptly at 6:30pm.
