Daily Five: A Book Club, Unused Prescriptions And A Cat Show

Five Things To Know, Thursday, Sept. 13

1.  Today is Thursday, Sept. 13. The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies, a high temperature of 75 degrees and clear skies tonight. The low will drop to 59.

2.  The Groton Public Schools and are co-sponsoring book discussion groups this year for parents, teachers and others in the community to discuss education-related topics. The first book is “Schools Cannot Do It Alone” by Jamie Vollmer.

The book discussion will be held from 4 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Oct. 4 in the school administration central office and from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Oct. 4 at Groton Public Library. Sean McKenna, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, will attend both events.

3.  The is participating in the national prescription drug take back program later this month, in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration. The program allows people to bring unused prescriptions and other medications to a site for safe disposal. The drop-off program will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Sept. 29 at the Groton Senior Center.

4.  The Damn Yankees Cat Club will present a cat show from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Sept. 29 and from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sept. 30 at Grasso Tech in Groton. The show seeks a donation of $6 for adults and $5 for seniors. Profits support animal welfare groups.

5.  U.S. Rep. Joseph Courtney said in a press release Wednesday that he’s been assured the resolution before Congress would pay for doubled submarine production at Electric Boat. Courtney said he asked Assistant Secretary of the Navy Sean Stackley about the resolution for the 2013 fiscal year, and was told it included money to build two Virginia Class submarines.
