Daily Five: A Home Show, Multicultural Night and Electric Boat

Five Things To Know Monday, April 15

1.  Today is Monday, April 15. The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies and a high temperature of 52 degrees. The low will drop to 43 degrees tonight.  

2.  The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut and the Builders and Remodelers Association of Eastern Connecticut, Inc., are co-sponsoring Eastern Connecticut’s Premier Home Show from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. on April 20 and from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on April 21 at the Mystic Marriott. The show will feature dozens of vendors including builders, painters, contractors, electricians, architects and financial advisors.  Tickets are $8, and may be purchased at the entrance to the show.  

3.  Northeast Academy is hosting 6th annual Multicultural Night, sponsored by the Parent Teacher Organization, from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. on, April 24. Almost 200 people attended the event last year, which offered entertainment included an Indian dance, a bag piper, Balinese dancers and a drummer. Tables were also set up representing Italy, China, India, Indonesia and Ireland, so students could visit various exhibits.  

4.  Groton’s Electric Boat will proceed with repair work on the USS Miami, the submarine damaged in a fire on May 23 while at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Maine, Congressman Joe Courtney announced in a news release. The Navy had chosen EB for the work, but it then became uncertain due to sequestration until April 12. 

“Getting the Miami back into service is a top priority for our Navy, and their decision to move forward with this effort, even under tighter budget constraints, is yet another indication of the important role that our submarine force plays in the defense of our nation,” Courtney said in the release. 

5.  Representative Town Meeting’s public works committee will meet at 7 p.m. today in the Senior Center conference room to discuss the budget.  The group continues its discussion Tuesday at the same time and place. The various committees are reviewing the budgets for each of the departments, then reporting back to the full RTM.
