Daily Five: Help Name Mystic Aquarium’s Harbor Seal Pup

1. Today is Thursday, April 11. The National Weather Service predicts cloudy skies, a 40 percent chance of rain and a high temperature of 52 degrees. The low will fall to 39 tonight, rain is likely, and winds of 17 to 23 mph are expected.
2. Mystic Aquarium is asking for the public’s help naming seal Pup 49, a female harbor seal that had her back left flipper amputated after a life-threatening infection, according to a news release. Aquarium volunteers came up with five names, all after harbors: Coral, Grace, Hope, Madison and Mystic. You can vote at www.mysticaquarium.org until Sunday, April 21.
3. Two graduates of the 339th session of the Connecticut POST Academy will be assigned to field training officers with the Groton Police Department for the next 16 weeks to become patrol officers, according to the town manager’s report. Marvel Bennett was born in Jamaica, earned his associate’s degree at Manchester Community College and is working on a bachelor’s degree, the report said. Natasha Mitchell graduated cum laude from the University of Bridgeport and was a founding member of the university women’s lacrosse team.
4. The Garde Arts Center in New London will host a program called, “Get Real! Wise Women Speak,” at 6:30 p.m. today. The program benefits the Women & Girls Fund of Southeastern CT, and features the showing of an award-winning film that profiles different women who benefit families, communities and the planet. Producer, director and writer Joni Steele Kimberlin will attend. The event includes a dessert and wine reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by the movie and a discussion. Tickets are $15 or $10 for groups of 5 or more, and are available at www.gardarts.org or by calling 860-444-7373, ext. 1.
5. Bill Memorial Library is sponsoring a program called “By Land and By Sea” from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. on April 20 at the Shennecossett Yacht Club. Speakers from the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation will present battlefield discoveries and evidence of Pequot mariners global travels in the 19th century. Cocktails ad Hors d’Oeuvres will be offered before the presentation. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door. For reservations, call (860) 445-0392.
