Daily Five: Schools Help Restock Groton Food Locker
Five Things To Know Thursday, March 21

1. Today is Thursday, March 21. The National Weather Service predicts cloudy skies, a chance of snow after 7 a.m. and a high temperature of 39 degrees. The low will fall to 26 degrees tonight. The chance of precipitation is 40 percent.
2. Students from three Groton schools have helped restock the Groton Food Locker! Mary Morrisson Elementary, Charles Barnum Elementary and Ella T. Grasso Southeastern Technical High School all contributed to the food locker recently, according to a report by the town manager.Â
Mary Morrisson held a chili cook-off on Feb. 15, baked pies and raised $535 for the food locker; students and staff at Charles Barnum collected canned goods, non-perishable items and pet food for the food locker and thepet food locker; and Grasso Tech’s Ineract Club collected 1,400 pounds of canned and non-perishable food, then split between the Groton Food Locker and the United Way Food Center in New London. The donations helped restock the locker, which had been depleted after the holidays.

3. The Connecticut Department of Transportation will be replacing pavement markings near Interstate-95 in June if you notice some traffic. The work will include markings at I-95 northbound near the North Road underpass in Groton, through Stonington and to the Rhode Island State line; and at I-95 southbound from the Rhode Island state line and through Stonington, Groton and New London. The excludes the Gold Star Bridge.
4. Groton Public Schools and Groton Public Library continue their joint discussion at 7 p.m. today in the library about their latest read, the bestseller Cinderella Ate My Daughter, by Peggy Orenstein. The book deals with how society influences girls to worry more about how they look than who they are, and whether or not they grow out of it. The event is free and members of the community are invited to attend. Copies of the book are available at the Library. Â

5. The Mystic Irish Parade is this weekend! It's scheduled from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday. The parade starts at Mystic Seaport, ends at the Mystic Arts Center and is free. For details, check out http://www.mysticirishparade.org.
