Daily Five: See List of Roads To Be Repaved In Groton Next Year

Five Things To Know, Thursday, Dec. 13

1.  Today is Thursday, Dec. 13.  The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies and a high temperature of 44 degrees. The low will fall to 33 degrees tonight.

2.  The town hopes to go to bid in January on the first set of roads to be repaved since voters passed the road ordinance in November. The roads to be paved are: Meridian Street, Mohegan Road, Osage Lane, Seneca Drive, Erie Lane, Sachem Road, Toll Gate Road, Carter Road and Knoll Drive. The total cost of the projects is $1.44 million.

3.  The Town Council’s personnel committee approved five appointments to several town boards and commissions on Tuesday. Councilors approved William Middleton as an alternate member of the Historic District Commission, Lee Vincent to the Community Development Advisory Committee, Daniel Campbell to the Permanent School Building Committee, Kenneth Steere to the Harbor Management Commission and James Mitchell to the Board of Assessment Appeals. The Town Council will vote on the appointments Dec. 18.

4.  The names of members of a task force that would determine a long-term vision for the Groton Public Schools have been released, but the group has not been officially formed yet. The task force would look at school buildings and try to come up with a plan for future construction. The Town Council’s Committee of the Whole decided to wait to have a joint meeting with the Groton Board of Education to discuss the task force, possibly on Jan. 8.

The task force members named are: Town Councilors James Streeter and Deborah Peruzzotti; Representative Town Meeting Moderator Jean Claude Ambroise; Board of Education members Rita Volkmann and Kim Sheparson Watson; Permanent School Building Committee Member Enrico DeMatto; Planning Commission Member Hal Zod; school administrator Karen Bryer; teachers Tricia Semancik and Robert Beaulieu, Jr.; and citizens Kevin Fiftal, Holly Bresnahan, Jon Heller, Craig Koehler, Wes Greenleaf, Melissa Roode, Kevin Trejo, Dan O’Donnell and Marc Denno.

5.  Bill Memorial Library is holding a free Teen Chocolate Tasting and Games Night at 6 p.m. today at the library on Monument Street. The evening is geared to children in grades 6 to 12, and the library will provide chocolate from around the world for the teens to taste.  Registration is recommended; for more information, call the library at (860) 445-0392.
