Daily Five: Sentencing Scheduled Friday For Conspiracy In Groton Murder

1.  Today is Wednesday, Sept. 19.  The National Weather Service predicts cloudy skies, a 40 percent chance of showers until about 1 p.m., and a high temperature of 71 degrees. Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low of 54.

2.  A 29-year-old former bank teller will be sentenced on Friday for conspiracy in a Groton murder. Meagan Foley, of Shaw Street, pleaded guilty in July in New London Superior Court to helping plan a 2008 murder at a Groton hotel. Foley, who is represented by Middletown lawyer Averum Sprecher, has an agreed upon sentence of 15 years in prison, suspended after five years, with three years’ probation.

Foley has been imprisoned at the York Correctional Institution since her arrest on March 2, 2009. The state accused her of complicity in the death of 33-year-old Jamel Campbell, who was shot to death at the Ramada Inn in Groton on Dec. 10, 2008.

3.  Groton Public Schools will hold a “Discover Learning” event from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Sept. 21 at Fitch High School. Discovering Education will bring pizza, prizes and provide a guest speaker, The Fitch Robotic Team will show off their 2012 competition robot and teachers will offer examples of how technology is used in the classroom. 4.  If you want to appeal your assessment of the 2011 Motor Vehicle Grand List, you’ll have to act soon. The Board of Assessment Appeals will hear appeals from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. today, Thursday and Monday. The board will also hear appeal from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday. 5.  On Sept. 21, Catherine Kolnaski Magnet School will take part in “Pinwheels for Peace” an international art and literacy project where students create and post pinwheels to express their feelings about peace. Two art teachers from Florida started the project in 2005, and it has evolved into children from schools in other countries creating pinwheels to mark the day.  The students at Cathrine Kolnaski will come outside by grade, display the pinwheels and take part in a short assembly at 10:30 a.m.
