Daily Five: Several Key Groton Education Issues On Table In Coming Weeks

1.  Today is Friday, Sept. 7.  The National Weather Service predicts partly sunny skies and a high temperature of 79 degrees. The low will fall to 69 degrees tonight.

2.  The Groton Town Council and Board of Education will meet jointly at 6 p.m. on Sept. 17 in the Town Hall Annex, and have several key issues to discuss. Topics include redistricting, an update on middle school consolidation, the school facilities task force and an update on the superintendent.

3.  The Groton Town Council will tour the former Groton Heights School at 9 a.m. on Sept. 22. A task force recommended earlier this year that the town solicit interest in the property with a preference given to education. Groton Heights was built in 1912, and has been vacant ever since it closed as a school in 2007.

4.  On Saturday, Sept. 8, easymeeting.net <>  is hosting a video conference for members of the 100th Infantry Division Association. The call will take place between easymeeting’s office in Mystic, Conn., where members of the 100th Infantry Division Northeast Regional Chapter will gather and the University of Virginia where members of the Southeast Chapter will gather.

"This is the first time in the history of the 100th Infantry Division that they have had their annual convention via video conference,” easymeeting’s Cody Loughlean said. “Up until this year, they would hold annual conventions that the veterans would meet at to share combat stories, informally chat with veterans, families and friends but due to funding and the travel restrictions for many of these veterans that is no longer the case. By having them meet now over video conference it will help them to have these get togethers and carry on the traditions and to catch up with fellow veterans across the country."

Easymeeting is providing the service for free.

5.   will take part in International Walk to School Day on Oct. 3, which encourages parents to walk to school with their children. The event reminds walkers of basic safety tips, such as obeying traffic signals, walking facing traffic, and having an adult cross the street with children under age 10. Walk to School Day will start at 8:30 a.m., and is being organized locally by Safe Kids New London County, a division of the community outreach department at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital.
