Daily Five: Thames Street Will Be Repaired In Sections

1.  Today is Wednesday, Feb. 13.  The National Weather Service predicts increasing clouds, a high temperature of 41 degrees and a 70 percent chance of snow tonight. Snow is expected mainly before 3 a.m. with an accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible. The low will drop to 31 degrees.

2.  Groton City Mayor Marian Galbraith said the city plans to start work on Thames Street this spring and go out to bid by the end of the month.  Galbraith said the project was held up by problems obtaining an easement, so the plans were changed. The street will be done in sections, she said. Workers will rebuild the two ends of Thames Street first, then finish the middle.

“They won’t be tearing up the whole street at once,” she said.

3.  The Groton Board of Education will meet from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. to discuss the proposed budget for the schools. Interim Superintendent John Ramos has proposed a $76.6 million education budget for the coming fiscal year, a 5.54 percent increase over last year's spending plan. 

4.  City Cabaret 2013 continues at 3 p.m. this Sunday with the O’Brien Strings, a classical trio of violin, viola and cello. The concert is free and the concert will take place in the auditorium of the City of Groton Municipal Building. 

5.  Bill Memorial Library holds its Winter Story Time program at 10:30 a.m. today for children ages 3 to 5. The program is free, held in the Children’s Room and features stories, songs with live music, fingerplays and crafts. For more information call (860) 445-0392.
