Daily Five: The Groton Budget, ‘Shred Day’ and Wayne’s Barber Shop
Five Things To Know Monday, April 8

1. Today is Monday, April 8. The National Weather Service predicts mostly sunny skies and a high temperature of 59 degrees. There’s a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms tonight after 2 a.m., and the low will drop to 46 degrees.
2. The Town Council continues deliberations this week on the proposed $121.6 million budget for the coming fiscal year. The council will review the budgets for libraries, outside agencies and the subdivisions, including Groton City and Groton Long Point and the at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in the Town Hall Annex. The proposed budget represents an increase of .6 percent over current spending, and would require a 5.4 percent increase in the tax rate.
3. The Groton Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. today in the Town Hall Annex and will discuss the superintendent search, and transportation for students attending magnet schools. The board will also receive updates on redistricting, security projects at the schools and hiring, among the topics.
4. Charter Oak Federal Credit Union will shred up to three boxes of documents for free from 9 a.m. until noon on April 13 at the branch at 625 Long Hill Road in Groton. The same service is being offered at the branch at One Connecticut Avenue in Norwich.
The annual “Shred Day” is intended to educate residents and protect them from the risk of identity theft by taking care of old bank statements, credit cards and other documents. The credit union will also be collecting non-perishable food items for local food pantries, including the Gemma E. Moran United Way Labor Food Center.
5. The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce has named Wayne’s Barber Shop in Mystic as the April “business of the month.” The chamber highlights businesses based on community involvement, improvements, and overall success. The barber shop, founded by owner Wayne Richard’s grandfather, has been in Groton more than 50 years, and recently opened a second location in Mystic on Pearl Street.
