Daily Five: The Interim Superintendent, a Money Transfer And 68 Arrests

1.  Today is Monday, Oct. 1. The National Weather Service predicts mostly sunny skies, a breeze and a high temperature of 70 degrees. The low will fall to 55 degrees tonight.

2.  The Groton Board of Education will meet in executive session at 6 p.m. today in the school administration building to evaluate the former superintendent. Interim Superintendent Randall Collins left at the end of September.

3.  School Facilities Director Wes Greenleaf will ask the Groton Town Council on Tuesday to transfer $120,000 from the boiler replacement project at S.B. Butler Elementary to take care of additional costs of removing asbestos floor tile from Mary Morrisson Elementary. While the project is 95 percent complete, he said there is a remaining balance of at least $150,000. If he council approves the transfer, it would go forward to Representative Town Meeting for a vote.

4.  Groton will provide free parking at Grasso Technical School with shuttle service to the Groton Fall Festival, scheduled from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday. The event is free and open to the public, and will include booths from about 130 businesses, community organizations, crafters and food vendors, according to the weekly report by the town manager.

5.  The Groton Town Police made 68 arrests in May, including seven for driving under the influence and ten for narcotics violations, according to the department’s monthly management report. Among the incidents reported was a response to the Mystic drawbridge for a person threatening suicide. A crisis negotiator was able to talk the victim down to safety, the report said.
