Daily Five: The Town Mayor Takes Budget Questions and a Library Program is Postponed

1.  Today is Thursday, March 7.  The National Weather Service predicts snow, a high temperature of 41 degrees and a north wind of 32 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph. Snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are possible. Snow will continue tonight with another 1 to 3 inches expected, and the low temperature will fall to 32 degrees.

2.  Groton Mayor Heather Somers will hold office hours from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday in room 5 of the Groton Public Library for anyone who would like to discuss the upcoming budget. Residents can visit to offer suggestions, express concerns or have questions answered.

3.  Congressman Joe Courtney released a statement Wednesday after voting in favor of a Fiscal Year 2013 Continuing Resolution that would fully fund building two submarines at Electric Boat. Congress must still approve the resolution.

“For now, especially with the sequester in effect, the (resolution) accomplishes the important goal of keeping the government open, while also continuing the two-per-year submarine production rate at Electric Boat,” Courtney said. “That, in turn, protects not just our national security strategy but also thousands of jobs across our region that rely on stability in our submarine industrial base.”

4.  Groton Public Library has postponed it’s “World of Words Australian Slide Lecture” with Ralph Robinson that was originally scheduled for this evening due to the storm. The new time is 7 p.m. on March 14.

5.  Art on Groton Bank will hold its 7th annual outdoor art show from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. July 20 on the grounds of the Bill Memorial Library and is seeking artists to participate. Artists will receive a 10’ x 10’ space to present their work for a fee of $45.

Painters, sculptors, graphic artists, fine art crafts persons and others are welcome. Artists are encouraged to apply early for space in this year’s event online at www.artongrotonbank.com. For more information, call Chris Rose at the Gallery at Lighthouse in Groton at 860-445-7626, ext. 108.
