Daily Five: Today Is First Day Of School In Groton
Five Things To Know, Wednesday, Aug. 29

1. Today is Wednesday, Aug. 29. The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies and a high temperature of 77 degrees. The low will drop to 53 tonight.
2. Today is the first day of classes for Groton Public School students, so be on the lookout for children walking and for school buses. Elementary school runs from 8:55 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.; middle school runs from 8:05 a.m. until 2:45 p.m.; and high school runs from 7:25 a.m. until 2:07 p.m.
3. A Veterans Career Fair will be held from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. today at Nett Hall in Camp Niantic at 271 West Main St. Congressman Joe Courtney is hosting the event, and more than 17 businesses now hiring will attend, including Electric Boat in Groton, Westminster Tool, Cumulus Broadcasting, Mohegan Sun, ESPN and the Norwich Police Department.

4. If you have a talent you’d like to share, auditions for “Groton’s Got Talent” will be held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Sept. 22 in the Groton Senior Center. For more information, call Carol Pratt at (860) 441-6795. No appointments are necessary to try out though, and all ages are welcome. The show will be held from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Oct. 20 at the Senior Center.
5. A writing group will meet at 6:30 p.m. today at , at 109 Pequotsepos Road in Mystic. It’s free to attend, and writers of all levels are welcome, whether it’s poetry, essays, memoirs or fiction.
