Daily Five: Two Honorees, The Sing-off Winner and the Noank-Mystic Community Band

Five Things To Know Wednesday, March 27

1.  Today is Wednesday, March 27.  The National Weather Service predicts increasing clouds, a high temperature of 47 degrees and a low of 30 degrees tonight.

2.  Two Groton members of the military will be among those honored at the 2013 Community Heroes of Connecticut Breakfast celebration at 7:30 a.m. on April 12 in Branford, Conn. The event, organized by the American Red Cross, will recognize eight people, including Petty Officer Charles Barlow and Staff Sgt. Jared Bradovich, of Groton.

3.  A college student from Fairfield University won the Annual Submarine Birthday Ball Sing-off on March 22 and will sing the national anthem at the 113th Southeastern Connecticut Submarine Force Birthday Ball on April 13 at the MGM Grand, according to an article in Navy.mil.

Laura McKee competed with more than a dozen singers at Dealey Center for the honor, the article said.

4.  Groton Public Library and the Avalonia Land Conservancy are sponsoring a series of free programs called “Our Water: Upstream & Downstream” starting at 7 p.m. on April 2 in the library. During the first presentation, Scott Gravatt, head of the Eastern Connecticut Conservation District, will discuss two projects his group is handling, including a new “fish ladder” in Preston that helps fish migrate over a dam.

5.  The Noank-Mystic Community Band will perform a spring concert at 7 p.m. on April 12 in the City of Groton Municipal Building on Meridian Street. Admission is free, and refreshments will be available. The event is sponsored by Savings Institute Bank & Trust.
