Daily Five: West Side Portable Classrooms Delayed Until Nov. 9

1.  Today is Tuesday, Oct. 23. The National Weather Service predicts increasing clouds, a high temperature of 64 degrees and a 30 percent chance of showers after 2 p.m. The low will fall to 49 degrees tonight, and there’s a 50 percent chance of rain.

2.  Only half of the portable classroom for West Side has been received, according to a briefing memo by Interim Superintendent John Ramos. The other half is still waiting for permits, so he predicts the portables will not be ready before Nov. 9.

At Cutler Middle School, the portables are installed and are expected to be ready by the end of the week. The contractor is painting, installing ramps and steps. Maintenance staff are putting in Promethean boards, fire alarms, and Wi-Fi controls, the memo said.

3.  The third of four community meetings on the Groton school redistricting plan will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at Mary Morrisson Elementary School.  The Branford consulting firm Milone & MacBroom outlined the plan earlier this month. It would move 522 children throughout Groton’s elementary schools to correct a racial imbalance at Catherine Kolnaski Magnet School and even out student populations across school buildings.

4.  Fitch High School cheerleading is holding a “dining for a cause” fundraiser from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m. today at the Ninety Nine Restaurant at 117 Long Hill Road in Groton. If you print out the voucher attached to the event listing on Groton Patch, the restaurant will donate 15 percent of your guest check to the Fitch High School cheerleaders.

5.  Groton Human Services is holding a workshop series called “Active Parenting Now” for parents of children ages 5 to 12. The free program includes topics like setting boundaries and limits, and handling discipline. The workshop is held at 6 p.m. on Mondays through Nov. 19 at the Human Services building on Fort Hill Road. A light dinner and child care is provided for free.
