Revolutionary War Art Exhibit

The story of an important but little-known historical event of the American Revolution will be on view April 21-22 at the Jabez Smith House in Groton,
when selected paintings by David Wagner, illustrating the march to Yorktown by the French army under General Rochambeau, will be on exhibit. Mr Wagner painted the Battle of Groton Heights displayed in the lobby of Groton City Hall.

In June 1780, over 6000 French soldiers, 2000 horses, 600 oxen and hundreds of wagons stretched for miles across Connecticut in route from Newport, Rhode Island to Yorktown. Virginia, where the combined forces of the American and French armies defeated the British under General Cornwallis; the last major engagement of the war. The entire march traversed over 700 miles - through 8 states - and the District of Columbia.

Wagner's detailed painting's bring to life the ordeals of this monumental effort. The Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route (W3R) is now recognized as Connecticut's first National Historic Trail.
