Groton, CT- What does it mean to activate your star power? Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Southeastern Connecticut is an independent Council of GOTR international, and is a unique running program that uses research- based curricula to address the developmental stages of girls in grades 3-8. The fun, experienced based program combines training for a 5K event with interactive lessons by trained coaches, who lead small teams through dynamic discussions, activities and running games. These lessons encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development.

Activating your star power is one of the lesson themes that incorporates visualization in order to positively impact your thinking, feelings and behaviors. As assistant coaches at Stanton Elementary School, Sarah Brousseau and I recently listened to the girls during the warm-up as they shared their ideas on star power. Fifth grade student, Makayla, triumphantly stated, “I’m going to unleash my star power and think positively!” Her enthusiasm was met with cheers and laughter as the girls partnered up to run outside.

The coaches at Stanton have had the wonderful opportunity to watch the girls make connections, build relationships and work together. It’s in the small, collective moments, when they’re giving high fives, holding hands through the last lap and offering insightful responses, where positive change is really happening. We look forward to seeing how inspirational and supportive these girls will be on race day.
