Gold Star Bridge Walkway Will Be Closed For 2 Weeks

Starting Dec. 16, the Gold Star Memorial Bridge sidewalk between Groton and New London will be closed for around two weeks for repair work.

GROTON, CT — The state transportation department is closing the sidewalk on the Gold Star Memorial Bridge between Groton and New London for two weeks beginning Monday Dec. 16.

It's closing so workers can work on the pedestrian walkway's railing system in locations near the newly installed overhead sign support structures. A Connecticut Department of Transportation "work zone will be established on the bridge utilizing temporary lane closures, snooper trucks and aerial lifts to perform the necessary modifications to the bridge and railing. Multiple contractor crews working extended hours will be utilized to minimize the overall project duration."

Signage will be posted at the three sidewalk entrances to notify pedestrians of the closure. Barricades and fencing will be utilize to eliminate access to the sidewalk during the closure. Pedestrians are asked to please heed the signs and not attempt access the sidewalk during the scheduled closure.

Southeast Area Transit District bus routes 2, 3, and 108 provide service across the bridge.

Traffic impacts will be limited to daily shoulder and the right lane closures until the work is completed. Additional lane closures may be implemented during off peak hours.
