UPDATED: 8:50 p.m.

Karina Montoya and Lara Schrage were right near the blast when it happened, Montoya’s husband, Michael Morin, of Mystic, said.

“She’s just pretty shaken up,” Morin said of his wife. “Said she was right there and she saw it.”

She is on her way home by train. He said their communication has been limited since the explosion, but “she just said it was a stampede and they all took off running,” he said.

Morin said he using a marathon phone app to track his wife so he knew she finished at 1:39 p.m. Then he heard about the explosions.

It was about two hours before he heard from her, because cell phone communication was shut off.

“I just kept checking the news and tried calling and calling,” he said. “Finally, I got a text message from her.” The couple has two daughters, ages 3 and 4. Montoya, who was running for the John Kelley Foundation, works as a fitness instructor at the YMCA in Mystic.

Philip A. Plouffe, of Mystic, is safe and on is way home, said his fiance, Debby Dutton.

"He was about a half a mile from the finish line," when the explosion occurred, she said. "He said he didn't see or hear anything. People were just running toward him."

"He said it was just chaos and confusion," she said. Plouffe works at the Mystic post office.

James M. Roy of Groton, Spyros Barres of Mystic, Bill Billing of Mystic, and Gary Burfoot of Mystic, are also safe.

Laura Brustolon, of Mystic, finished the race considerably before the explosion happened, her mother said.

“She’s the one that notified me that she was OK, and I was like, ‘What do you mean you’re OK? I was at work when it happened,’” Linda Brustolon said.

David Olivier said his son, Mark Olivier, of Groton, was at the marathon but had to drop out of the race early due to an injury.

David Olivier said his wife was at the race also, he was in constant contact with both of them, and they left the course about a half hour before the explosion occurred.

“He’s definitely OK. He actually was injured, not as a result of the explosion but had to drop out about halfway due to a leg injury,” David Olivier said. He said his son has run in several marathons, some half marathons and was trying to qualify for the Olympics. Mark Olivier works at Pfizer.

Lara Schrage, of Groton, who also ran is safe, according to friends who posted on Groton Patch facebook.

Gary Sturgeon was listed as a runner but did not run in the marathon due to an injury.
