Groton Library Celebrates International Day of Peace

Groton Library has events leading up to Peace Day.

The Groton Public Library is celebrating the International Day of Peace by offering a photo contest, crafts and a movie in the week leading up to Peace Day, which is Sept. 21. The International Day of Peace was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981 and the first Peace Day was celebrated in September 1982. In 2002 the General Assembly officially declared Sept. 21 as the permanent date for the International Day of Peace. 
 
Origami Workshop and Peace Crafts
 
An origami workshop with Peter Dentch will be held at the Groton Public Library on Saturday, September 14, at 2 p.m. Learn how to fold peace cranes to honor International Day of Peace. Other peace inspired crafts will be available as well.
 
Film
 
The Groton Public Library will show a movie with a peace theme on Tuesday, September 17, at 6:30 p.m. The movie is rated PG-13 and runs for 121 minutes.
 
Peace Themed Teen Photo Contest
 
The Groton Public Library is proud to host a teen photography contest. Teens between the ages of 12 and 18 are welcome to submit original photography relating to the chosen theme of “Peace.” Submissions will be accepted from September 10 through September 17.
 
Teens will select the contest winners by voting for their favorite photographs. Voting will begin on September 18 and will run until September 25 with the winners being announced on September 26. Photos will be on display in the library’s teenscape area throughout the month of October.

CONTEST RULES
 
1. All participants must be between the ages of 12 and 18.

2. There is a limit of one entry per person.

3. Entry must relate to the theme of “Peace”.

4. All entries must be original photography and must be the work of the entrant.

5. Entries must be submitted to the library with an application form.

6. Photographs must be matted and at least 8x10 inches in size, but not larger than 16 x 20 inches.

7. By entering this contest, you grant the Groton Public Library permission to use your photo.

8. The photographer is responsible for obtaining any necessary permission if his/her photograph includes an identifiable individual. Copies of our photo release form are available if necessary.

9. The library reserves the right to determine what photos are appropriate for public display.

10. A People’s Choice Award will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.
