MADD Honors Groton Town Police For Drunk Driving Enforcement

Town police second in the state for impaired driving arrests in 2019. Officers Anthony Lucero and Marvel Bennett were recognized by MADD.

GROTON, CT - The Groton Town Police Department was recognized as the top police department of its size for drunk driving arrests in 2019. And it was second only to the Hartford Police Department for impaired driving arrests statewide in 2019.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving - Connecticut held its Law Enforcement Recognition Ceremony Monday at Mohegan Sun Casino. Groton Town police officers Anthony Lucero and Marvel Bennett were recognized for their drunk driving enforcement efforts.

“I’m proud of these outstanding efforts by our officers to detect drugged and drunk driving. There is no doubt that their actions saved lives and prevented needless tragedies,” Groton Town Police Chief Louis J. Fusaro said.

“This level of commitment by our patrol officers - and leadership by their supervisors - is evidence of their dedication to keeping our streets and community safe. We truly appreciate the work of Mothers Against Drunk Driving and thank them for their recognition of the Groton Police Department and our officers,” Fusaro said.

“This award demonstrates our agency’s continued commitment to keeping Groton safe by maintaining traffic safety as one of our top priorities.”

The Groton Town Police Department was ranked by MADD as number one in the state for Operating Under the Influence arrests for medium-sized departments with 50-plus officers. And the department ranked second in the state for overall OUI enforcement with 263 OUI arrests in 2019, second only to Hartford.

The mission of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is to end drunk driving, help fight
drugged driving, support the victims of these violent crimes, and prevent underage drinking.
The women and men of the Groton Town Police Department are dedicated to removing
impaired drivers from our roadways in an effort to reduce the number of accidents and
corresponding injuries and fatalities attributed to operating under the influence.
