Matt Harvey Has a Tear in His Elbow, May be Out for a Year
The Mystic native has a tear in his elbow and may need Tommy John surgery.

Mystic’s very own major league pitcher Matt Harvey was racking up a historic season this summer starting for the Mets. Harvey ranks second in the majors in ERA, third in WHIP and fourth in strikeouts this season with 191, according to ESPN statistics.Â
The 23-year-old was also throwing the fastest balls this season until Tuesday when it was announced Monday that his great season may very well be over.Â
The Fitch High School graduate has a tear in his pitching elbow. General Manager Sandy Alderson told reporters ESPN reporters that Harvey may require Tommy John surgery although no one will know for sure for a couple more weeks when the swelling has subsided.Â

According to ESPN Tommy John surgery generally requires a 12-month recovery period.Â
The diagnosis came as a surprise to Harvey who said he was experiencing forearm tenderness for a month or so but didn’t think it was anything serious. Harvey said he decided to get it checked out after a 102-pitch to the Detroit Tigers Saturday.

Harvey said he’ll do anything he can do to avoid the surgery.Â
