Mobile Food Pantry’s Inaugural Stop at Human Services Draws Big Crowd

The United Way’s mobile food pantry made its first stop at the Groton Human Services Building today and distributed bags of fresh fruit, vegetables, and meat to 90 families from the area they tweeted Wednesday afternoon. 

Jennifer Blanco, mobile food pantry coordinator, said anyone is welcome and that they only ask for identification, not proof of income. On Wednesday, they distributed food to families from Mystic, Stonington, Norwich, Ledyard, Bozrah, New London and Niantic, according to a report in The Day. 

The mobile food pantry is outfitted to hold 5,000 pounds of food, which would serve 150-200 household, said Blanco. 

“We’ve prove we can serve more than that,” Blanco said of efficient packing methods. 

They use the food pantry to distribute perishable like fresh kale, corn, carrots, apples and meets food and they make sure to include foods that are suitable for those with dietary restrictions. 

The mobile Food Pantry will be back in Groton on the fourth Friday of the month at St. John’s Christian Church and it will return to Human Services on the second Wednesday of each month. They make other stops around the area, click here for their complete schedule.
