Feds Investigating Plane Crash Into Groton House: Video, Photos

GROTON, CT — A plane crashed into a house in Groton late Monday night, injuring the two aboard the plane. Police said both escaped the wreckage on their own and were taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London. Police said the house was occupied at the time; no one inside was injured.

Nearby homes were evacuated as a precautionary measure while fire crews and EMS attended to the scene.

Groton police Deputy Chief Paul Gately said calls began coming in to Groton Emergency Communications Center reporting the crash at 10:38 p.m.

The plane landed on the roof of the house at 255 Ring Drive in the Poquonnock Bridge section of the town, about 2 miles from the Groton-New London Airport.

Following the crash, an early report from emergency services claimed, "Everyone's safe." But later, emergency dispatch reports noted two people were hospitalized.

A representative from the Connecticut Airport Authority was en-route around 11 p.m., dispatchers reported. The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation and is expected at the scene Tuesday.

NTSB spokesman Eric Weiss said the agency would have a preliminary report within two weeks but noted that, "our investigations could take between one and two years to complete."

A local filmmaker also captured video of the crash scene and shared it with Patch.

Myriad agencies responded to the crash site including the Groton Town Police Department, Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department, Mystic Fire Department, Submarine Base Fire Department, Mystic River Ambulance, and Groton Ambulance.

Groton Utilities and town building officials also responded.
