Primary Turnout Low In Groton So Far

Two districts report voter turnout of less than 10 percent at midday.

Chris Sebastianelli said jobs were on her mind when she cast her ballot in Groton today.

“We need them. We need them in Connecticut,” said Sebastianelli, a teacher. “The young people are between a rock and a hard place.”

She added, “A lot of them don’t realize that $15 an hour is not going to support a family.”

Turnout was light , despite the focus on taxes and government spending as issues.

Peter Fichera said he couldn’t believe how few people were voting. Fichera said after casting his ballot, he considers it a priveledge.

“It’s a right that is given to us and everyone should take advantage of it, because it’s the only thing given to us that’s free,” he said.

Deb Patrick, moderator of district 2 in Groton, said 80 voters had cast ballots as of 12:15 p.m., or 8 percent of the 993 registered.

“We have not had a line at all,” she said. “We’ve had one or two people come in at a time.”

Nearby, district 3 reported 84 ballots cast as of 11:50 a.m., or less than 7 percent of the 1,219 registered.

“If they get between 15 to 20 percent total turnout throughout the day that would be the best,” Republican Registrar Stephen Massett said.
