Once Considered an Eyesore, Guilford Residents Now Appreciate Modern Design of Condo Complex

The architect, Wilfred Armster designed the building at a time modern architecture was being pushed to the side.

Nearly 30 years after construction, residents in Guilford have come to appreciate the controversial design of the condominium complex in Whitfield Shores.

According to the New Haven Register, Architect Wilfred Armster came under fire in 1984 when he first proposed the design. People criticized Armster for not using a more colonial design and that one person even threatened him for building something so radical. Residents were also against building the condo in such a historic area.

The 300-foot-long building cost $2.5 million to build and is mainly made out of copper, steel and wood.

Armster told the paper he drew his inspiration for the building from scenes from natures as well as from the forms and structures of ships.

Armster’s daughter, Sarah Armster told the paper that now locals love and embrace the building or the “spaceship”, a term Armster resented at first.
