Meet: Animal Control Officer Kimlyn Marshall

Get to know the folks in Ledyard town government.

Welcome to the third installment in Patch's ongoing series "Meet". This series is designed to let you get to know town employees a little better. It's always nice to put a face (and some details) with a name!

Today we meet Animal Control Officer Kimlyn Marshall.

Name: Kimlyn Flanzer Marshall

Age: 49

Job title: Ledyard Animal Control Officer

Town of residence: Gales Ferry

Where did you grow up? Gales Ferry

Family: I have been married 18 years to John Marshall, a local carpenter and a Ledyard Town Councilor. We have 3 incredible children, Joshua, 24; Dutcher, 22; and Marissalyn, 16 (she has spent the last 8 years helping me at work).

Education: I graduated Ledyard High School in 1982 as a Ag Sci student, I also graduated from the National Animal Control Academy.

Previous employment: Before this job I worked for 16 years driving a school bus here in Ledyard and also in Winsted, CT. Driving special need children and adults was incredible and my children learned a lot riding with me. I had summers and snow days off and I do miss that!

What do you love about your job? I love the diversity about my job. One day I can be caring for no pets and the next 13! We have gotten in American Alligators, birds, goats, snakes, potbelly pigs. We have had dogs giving birth and cats with kittens. I meet many incredible people and many not so great. Every day is different but what stays the same is how we care for each pet that comes in as our own.

What don't people know about your job? Most people think I am a "vet" ,"dog trainer", "behavioral specialist". I am not. But the trick in this job is to surround your self with people that are! We have a great community of caring residents and I receive a lot of good advice when I ask.

And just for fun:

The last book you read: Joyland By Stephen King. I have all of his books and would LOVE to meet him some day.

The last movie you saw: Not much of a movie watcher but I have watched the series The Walking Dead

What TV show do you never miss? Big Bang Theory

If you could bring 1 other person (living or dead) and 1 thing with you to a deserted island, who and what would they be? I would bring Stephen King and a laptop so I could have uninterrupted time listening to him talk and then share the experience with my family and friends.
