Obituary: Phoebe “Esther” (Taylor) Perkins, 86, of Ledyard

Phoebe “Esther” (Taylor) Perkins, 86, of Ledyard, died Thursday, January 19, 2017.
Born in Old Mystic, CT she was the daughter and the youngest of three children of the late Lloyd and Charlotte (Norman) Taylor and was a graduate of Stonington High School class of 1948.

Following high school, she married Charles P. Perkins Sr. on October 8, 1949 and they were both Coast Watchers in Stonington for the Civil Defense Dep’t after WWII. They were married for forty-one years up until his death in 1990.
Esther along with her late husband, owned and operated the Perkins Dairy Farm in Stonington for forty-two years. During her years operating the farm, she worked several other jobs including, William Bendett’s in Mystic and Mary Elizabeth Nursing Center (Apple Rehab) and Pendleton Health and Rehabilitation Center both in Mystic. She also was a familiar face at the election Polling station at Deans Mill Elementary School for over forty years.

Esther enjoyed vegetable gardening, sewing and knitting. She was a member of the Road Church Stonington, the Stonington Grange, the Wightman Fellowship of the Old Mystic Baptist Church and a member of the North Stonington Senior Center “Golden Agers.”
Esther is survived by her three children, Nancy Wheat (Jim) of FL., Phillip Perkins (Jeanette) of North Stonington and Scott Perkins (Paula) of Ledyard, along with twelve grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sons, Charles P. Perkins Jr. and Kenneth Perkins Sr.
Her family will receive friends Wednesday, January 25th from 6-8 pm at the Mystic Funeral Home located on Route 1. A service will be held on Thursday, at 10:00 am at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Elm Grove Cemetery Route 27 Mystic.
