LEDYARD, CT — Mayor Fred Allen explained that he was "1,000 miles away" during the holidays, but was aware that during the Ledyard Senior Center's annual Christmas luncheon, a 911 call was made.

Director of Parks and Recreation Scott Johnson was sitting next to a man who, Allen said, was "exhibiting signs of choking" and not breathing. Allen said Johnson could have simply called 911 and wait for help to arrive. He did call 911, but he did not wait, Allen said. Johnson performed CPR and the Heimlich maneuver.

"Scott truly saved a life that day," Allen said as he presented Johnson with a commendation at the Jan. 22 Town Council meeting.
