Hand Football Coach Mastroianni Resigns: Report

The New Haven Register reported the winning head coach tendered his resignation Tuesday, citing sources. Mastroianni is battling cancer.

MADISON, CT — The New Haven Register is reporting that Daniel Hand High School coach Dave Mastroianni has resigned as head of the school's football team, one he led to win two state titles.

The paper reported that "multiple sources confirmed" his departure. It's reported health issues were cited in a resignation letter.

The Register reported the school has set a meeting with players and families Thursday and reported its sources said "seven-time championship coach Steve Filippone could be tapped to lead the program on an interim basis."

As reported by Patch in October, as his team was hosting its cancer-awareness charity Pink Paw Game, he was with them in spirit only as he waged his own fight against cancer. The Tigers head coach was diagnosed with a malignancy after an appendectomy in late September. He had a second surgery to remove the cancer in October.
